Adventure Northwest operates three caribou camps — Little Marten Lake, Whitewolf Lake and Thonokied Lake. Our camps are 160–200 miles north, northeast of Yellowknife, just above the treeline in the middle of the late-summer range of the Bathurst Caribou Herd, a herd estimated at over 400,000 animals.
About Our Camps
All caribou camps have comfortable heated wall tents with wooden floors. There is a larger kitchen tent in each camp, where our cooks prepare and serve excellent camp meals, which often include caribou and freshly caught fish.
All employees are committed to providing you with a quality hunt and have agreed to abstain from alcohol while in camp. We in turn encourage all hunters to keep their alcohol to themselves and in their own tent. Every client will be provided with the current hunting regulations and is expected to familiarize themselves with them. Any client who knowingly breaks these regulations will be sent to Yellowknife at their own expense.
During the hunt you will be transported by boat before walking inland to glass and hunt. The tundra has many eskers and ridges allowing you to get on higher ground to glass; they also provide good ground cover to get within rifle and bow range. The terrain is generally dry and rocky — no hip waders are necessary, but sturdy waterproof hunting boots are a must.
Temperatures in the barren grounds can range from 32°F to 75°F in late August, down to 28°F to 40°F by late September. Some snow can be expected in mid to late September; it generally melts within a day but has been known to stay.
At all caribou camps, wolf, wolverine and ptarmigan are known to inhabit the area, and licences and tags are included in the hunt price. In addition to excellent hunting, all of the lakes provide great fishing for lake trout, northern pike and grayling.
