Hunting & Fishing FAQ
Answers to the questions our clients ask most often about hunting and fishing with Adventure Northwest.
What species can I hunt with Adventure Northwest?
Caribou, muskox, wolf, grizzly bear, polar bear and Atlantic walrus, across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. We also offer world-class lake and river fishing.
Do I buy my own licence and tags?
Yes. All hunting licences and tags are purchased by the hunter on arrival in the community where the hunt takes place. Our team helps you understand exactly what you need before you go.
How long are the hunts?
Hunts range from 6 to 16 days. For example, Arctic Island muskox hunts are 6 days, wolf hunts 8 days, barren ground muskox 10 days, grizzly hunts 13 days, and polar bear hunts 16 days.
What's included in a hunt price?
Typically: transfers, air charter to camp, lodging in camp, all meals in camp, hunting licences and tags, and guide services. Not included: export permits and trophy fees, gratuities, accommodation/meals in Yellowknife, taxidermy, overweight baggage and GST. Each hunt page lists what's included and not.
What are trophy fees and how do I pay them?
Trophy fees are paid in Canadian currency at the local wildlife office (for example, $150 for muskox, $750 for polar bear). It's important to have Canadian currency on hand, as few northern communities accept credit cards.
How do I get to the hunt?
Most hunts begin in Yellowknife, the gateway to the North. From there you fly by air charter or floatplane to the camp or northern community. Travel to and from Yellowknife and the community is the hunter's responsibility; we help arrange the rest.
Should I buy trip-cancellation insurance?
Yes — Adventure Northwest strongly recommends trip-cancellation insurance on all northern hunts. Arctic weather can delay flights and cost you extra days, so insurance protects your investment. We can help point you to coverage.
Can I bring my own firearm?
Yes. You'll need a soft gun case for floatplane travel and to declare your firearm with Canadian customs. We'll advise you on requirements for your specific hunt.
